Stagecoach - Unforgiven - True Grit Comparison

When I look at Stagecoach and True Grit, I see many similarities. One being the concept of bringing together characters of different backgrounds. In Stagecoach, their is a banker, prostitute, alcoholic, gambler and a respectable woman that all come together and face the same conflicts. In the beginning, they all seemed uncomfortable with each other; for example, when Mallory has to sit at a different seat because she will not sit next to Dallas. The same connection between characters happens in True Grit. At first, Cogburn and LaBoeuf don't seem to get along, but after they fight together to catch Chaney, they seem to connect.

I think Unforgiven is a revisionist style western because the amount of graphic violence portrayed in the movie. Cogburn is known for having the most "grit", in other words, shooting without hesitation, just like William Munny in the saloon.

I think True Grit is more of a classic western film. This is because it's not as graphically violent but still has gun fights and shoot outs. Also, True Grit had a kind of Stagecoach journey home kind of feel, which makes me think its a classic.

Online Film Analysis Assignment

Clip A Ocean's 11

This clip starts with everyone seated around a poker table. Since the conversation at the table goes back and forth between different characters, the shots had to match the eyelines of the people who were speaking. Eyeline matches are an example of continuity editing. This clip also uses shot/reverse shots frequently to show George Clooney and Brad Pitt calling bluffs.

Clip B Strangers on a Train

This clip is interesting because it takes place on a merry go round; it feels like its speeding up. The music being played by the merry go round is diegetic sound because the people on the ride can hear it. The fighting was showed in a medium shot, using close up's to show more emotion of the riders. I also felt the use of  coordination rhythm because the music made the ride feel faster the fighting more confusing.

Clip D from Magnolia

This clip is unique because it is a long shot. This means the camera follows the actors continuously with no cuts.I  liked the long shot because it leads you through the characters footsteps and makes you truly experience the film. It also uses nondiegetic sound. The string instruments playing in the background give the story a calming feeling. Also, a steadicam was used to follow the characters during the long shot.

Clip E from Amadeus

This clip uses mental subjectivity because it goes into the old man's memory showing one of his achievements. It also uses a straight-on angle when the two characters are talking. I found the transition between current time and the opera scene from the past appealing because it was smooth and you barely noticed it.

My Review of Tron
I strongly like the film Tron because the story is complex and you need to pay attention to the whole movie to understand the true importance of each scene. Also, the high speed and constant action kept my attention throughout the movie. It has extreme motorcycle chases and cool bikes that make the movie really interesting. It also has high quality visuals and is a great 3D movie. The movie is based off of the computer game BM-TRON, made by ENCOM, Kevin Flynn enters cyberspace and creates a new world on the grid. Like the game, programs compete on the grid. I thought the concept of being inside a computer game was really interesting and creative. The reason the movie was successful was because of the well thought out plot that made the story believable.
